02/01/11 PM SERVICE...Transcends Time

PSALM. 95
1 He is our Rock (OT/NT).
2 We should come into His presence to thank Him, worship Him in song.
3 LORD is great God, King above all gods.
4-5 God is creator of world.
6-7 We should humbly worship God because He is our Creator and our God, our Shepherd (Provider/Protector).
7 He calls us to deliberate surrender.
8 Harden not your heart as in wilderness.
See also Hebrews 3:8-19.

This lesson had two parts;
Part #1 Considered Psalm 95 and
Part #2 Considered Hebrews 3:8-19, which is the New Testament explanation of the Psalm passage.

PART #1
PASSAGE...
Psalms 95:1-11

(1) O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
(2) Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.
(3) For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
(4) In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also.
(5) The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land.
(6) O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.
(7) For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today if ye will hear his voice,
(8) Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
(9) When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.
(10) Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:
(11) Unto whom I swore in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.

NOTES...
Some portions of Scripture are time specific; some promises, warnings, blessings, judgments are either people, time, nation, dispensation specific. This Psalm transcends Old Testament and New Testament.

(1) O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
DLG notes...
WORSHIP... This command is given to all generations and all people (Ps. 15:48:7-11; Ps. 150:6). Even the angels sang as they worshiped God (Job 38:7).
ROCK... God is referred to as Rock in the OT (Deu. 32:31; Ps. 18:2) and the NT (1 Co. 10:4). He is the same, He changes not (Mal. 3:6; He. 13:8).

(2) Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.
DLG notes...
As God was worshiped by the angels in pre-history, we should worship Him now with thanksgiving and song. This is why we testify and sing in church.

(3) For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
DLG notes...
Notice, God is above all the gods of the nations (Deu. 8:19); He is the Great God (Ps. 145:3) and the Great King, not only above all gods, but all kings. We see that regency is inherent to the nature and position of God.

(4) In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also.
(5) The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land.
DLG notes...
God formed the universe and holds it in His hand. Picture the immensity as well as the omnipotence of God.

(6) O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.
DLG notes...
God is worthy of all worship, but recognizing and honoring God as LORD is a choice we are given. He is worthy because He is our Maker.

(7) For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today if ye will hear his voice,
DLG notes...
He is also worthy because He is our Redeemer... Protector, Provider, Paraclete (Comforter).
We are admonished to HEAR the voice of God, today, now, in the present.

(8) Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
(9) When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.
DLG notes...
We are warned not to harden our own hearts.
We are reminded that the Israelites hardened their hearts during the Exodus from Egypt.
The Israelites had been delivered from Egypt, Pharaoh and Bondage (as we are delivered from Darkness, Devil and Depravity). Just as they turned their hearts from God, we can turn our hearts from God.
Though they were delivered the Power of God and had fed the Provision of God and kept by the Protection of God, the Israelites turned from God and tempted Him with their disbelief and disobedience.

(10) Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:
DLG notes...
Though the Israelites had been worshiped God and followed God out of Egypt, they turned back to idols and carnality. This cut them off from God. God wants people with living, current and active faith, not a dead and dry testimony of yesterday.

(11) Unto whom I swore in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.
DLG notes...
There was a rest reserved for the Israelites, subsequent to their deliverance from Egypt, but denied them because they refused to believe and obey.

PART #2
PASSAGE...
Hebrews 3:8-19

(8) Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
(9) When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.
(10) Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do always err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.
(11) So I swore in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
(12) Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
(13) But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
(14) For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end;
(15) While it is said, Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
(16) For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.
(17) But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness?
(18) And to whom swore he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?
(19) So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

NOTES...
Hebrews 3:8-19

(8) Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
(9) When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.
DGL notes...
The Israelites had PROVED God's ability through their testing.

(10) Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do always err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.
(11) So I swore in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
DLG notes...
See Notes in passage above (Ps. 95:8-11).

(12) Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
DLG notes...
This is spoken to Christians (brethren).
It is possible that a believer may still have an evil heart of unbelief, which can depart from the living God.
This also indicates that it is possible for a believer to not have an evil heart of unbelief. However, we all need to take account of ourselves, examine ourselves, take inventory or ourselves.
We need to come to the point of being delivered from the evil heart of unbelief and we need to keep ourselves free of this attitude that can destroy Christians.

(13) But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
DLG notes...
We are all given the ministry of exhortation. We should all encourage, admonish and confront one another and we should all be willing to be encouraged, admonished and confronted.
If sin invades the believer, it can harden his heart to God and grace.
We need to be open to others, because if we have sin in us, it can deceive us into believing that we do not need to repent.

(14) For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end;
DLG notes...
Just as there are Divine conditions we must meet in order to get saved, there are conditions that we must meet in order to stay saved.
We must continue to believe, trust, have faith in Christ after being saved by faith. "Hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end."
There is contingency, condition attached to continuing in Christ. Hold fast, to the end, to the consummation of our lives.

(15) While it is said, Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
(16) For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.
DLG notes...
Not everyone who initially escapes sin (comes out of Egypt), continues to escape sin (by entering the Promised Land), but some of those who do escape sin do continue to escape sin completely.
God wants us all to be delivered completely from sin. God provided everything we need to deliver us from sin. The choice is ours.
1 Corinthians 10:12-14
(12) Wherefore let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.
(13) There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
(14) Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

(17) But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness?
DLG notes...
Though the word GRIEVED is used in this place, it refers to the passage in Ps. 95:10 where we see that He was angry, He loathed, detested, cut off the offender.
Remember, the writer is drawing a parallel with NT believers who fall away.

(18) And to whom swore he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?
(19) So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
DLG notes...
There are two sides to the same coin in this passage.

On the one side, the person is said to have “believed not” which is also translated, “disobeyed.” The Greek word is found in Strongs 544, and derived from 545, being related to “disobedience.” It has been referred to as a “practical disbelief” since true belief or “persuasion” results in obedience. Here are examples of the KJV translating this same word as “disobey.”

Romans 2:8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
Romans 10:21 But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.
1 Peter 2:7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
1 Peter 2:8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
1 Peter 3:1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;
1 Peter 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
1 Peter 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

On the other side, the person is said to be guilty of “unbelief” (570). The word in verse 19 is actual unbelief. God does not allow His people to progress, move forward if they do not continue in obedient faith.

Trust and Obedience go together. If a person is sensing a low level of faith, they should check to see if they are failing to disobey and vice-versa.

God said He would not allow those who disobey and disbelieve to enter into this special rest. In fact, the “rest” spoken of in the OT passage was a foreshadowing of the experience and life of entire sanctification and the Hebrews passage makes it clearer.

The term, “Sabbath Rest” is used in seven different Biblical models.
1. Sabbath Introduced On Seventh Day Of Creation
(Genesis 2:2-3; Exodus 16:1-8).
2. Israel’s Sabbath Law At Sinai (Exodus 20:8-11).
3. Israel to Rest In Promised Land (Hebrew 3:10-11, 16-19).
4. Israel Promised Rest Through David (Psalm 95:6-11).
5. The Sabbath Rest Of Salvation (Hebrews 3:7-4:13).
6. The 1,000 Year Sabbath Rest (Is. 11:10).
7. The Eternal Sabbath Rest (REVELATION 14:13).

There is a rest reserved for believers which accompanies the fullness of the Holy Spirit in Entire Sanctification, which is what Hebrews 3 and 4 are addressing. I will deal with this subject at another time.
