I also addressed the idea of
PARENTS SETTING THE STANDARD OF AUTHORITY FOR THEIR CHILDREN.

Parents walk a fine line of distinction between too much authority without affection and too much affection without authority. Maintaining the proper balance requires wisdom, courage and strength.

It is a mistake to give children the power of self-determination and self assertion too soon. It tends to puff them up with pride and carnal self reliance. This encourages them to trust their own understanding too much and reject parental, Biblical, pastoral and other legitimate authority. This is seen in the warning Paul gave concerning guidelines for Bishops (pastors). He said if a novice is given too much authority, he could fall into condemnation of the devil (1Tm. 3:6).

If children and young people do not learn respect and submission to proper authority, they will set their own standards and beliefs rather than accepting sound counsel. This will manifest itself more intensely as they get older.

While humility is "more caught than taught" it is more readily accepted in an atmosphere of loving discipline than it is where children/young people are trusted with autonomy or smothered in micro-managing authoritarianism

Our children are children and must yield to us. We should rule with love and they should obey with trust, humility and respect, or at least learn the consequences of self assertion.
