01/24/11 Sun/AM... WHO ARE THE STARS IN THE BIBLE?
(overview)
Stars are used in the Holy Bible in reference to...
rulers, leaders, both in government and religion:
Christ (Star out of Jacob, Day Star; Bright & Morning Star);
Angels (morning stars, stars of God);
Fallen Angels (Lucifer, stars of heaven fell, 1/3 part of the stars of heaven);
Humans (Joseph's brothers, earthly rulers, godly men, pastors, ungodly men).
DON'T BECOME A WANDERING/FALLEN STAR.
(I combined material from my intended SS Class and AM service because we only had 1 service.)
STARS IN THE BIBLE...
JESUS...
Numbers 24:17
(17) I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Scepter shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
DLG notes...
Prophesied by Balaam in days of Moses, during Israel's Wilderness Wanderings, long before Christ (thus NOT NOW and NOT NEAR).
The coming descendant of Jacob (Isarael, Jews), not Hagar or Keturah's sons (Arab world).
Prophecy can have
Immediate,
Intermediate and
Ultimate fulfillment.
David would be the intermediate,
Christ would be he Ultimate.
Scepter and Star are both mentioned, attaching royalty to star.
2 Peter 1:19
(19) We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
DLG notes...
Until the "Morning Star" (Jesus) comes back, we have the word of God, guiding us as a star (for instance; navigation, Star of Bethlehem), but Jesus will return and set up His Kingdom.
Revelation 22:16
(16) I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
ANGELS...
Judges 4:15
(15) And the LORD discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off his chariot, and fled away on his feet.
Judges 5:20
(20) They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera.
DLG notes...
God sent angels from heaven to fight in behalf of Israel.
Job 38:7
(7) When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
DLG notes...
Angels were present at the beginning of creation, giving them a very early arrival date (during Genesis 1:1, but before Genesis 1:2; prior to Adam in the Garden).
FALLEN ANGELS...
Isaiah 14:12-14
(12) How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
(13) For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
(14) I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Revelation 6:13
(13) And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casts her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
Revelation 9:1-2
(1) And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
(2) And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
Revelation 12:4
(4) And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

HUMANS
Israel,
Godly Men (righteous, soul winners, pastors)
Ungodly Men.
I combined material from my intended SS Class and AM service because we only had 1 service.
HUMANS...
Joseph's Brothers
Genesis 37:9-11
(9) And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
(10) And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?
(11) And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.
DLG notes...
The 11 stars (brothers of Joseph) would bow before Joseph (apparently the 12th star), being the other son of Jacob. Later, the heads of the twelve tribes would be called the “princes of Israel.” This again attaches the idea of rulers with stars.
The stars are also related to spiritual leadership.
Revelation 12:1
(1) And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
Remember, in the book of Revelation there are 24 elders, which are probably representative of the 12 tribes of Israel and the 12 apostles.
Godly Men
Godly Men Who Convert the Lost
Daniel 12:1-3
Daniel 12:1
And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which stands for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
DLG notes...
In God's angelic hierarchy, Michael was a prince and he was specially appointed to serve Israel. God is the God of order, both in personal affairs and lines of authority. It appears from Scripture that God appoints angels to watch over individuals and over governmental regions (Israel, Persia)
This passage foretold the coming of a world wide upheaval, unlike anything in the past. This refers to the coming Tribulation/Great Tribulation.
Those who are written in the book (Lamb's Book of Life) will be delivered from that coming torment.
Daniel 12:2
And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
DLG notes...
There are Two Resurrections; the resurrection of the righteous, to everlasting life, and the resurrection of the unrighteous to shame and contempt.
Jesus said,
John 5:28-29
(28) Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
(29) And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
Luke wrote,
Acts 24:15
(15) And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
Paul wrote,
Romans 2:4-13
(4) Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
(5) But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
(6) Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
(7) To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life:
(8) But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
(9) Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
(10) But glory, honor, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
(11) For there is no respect of persons with God.
(12) For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
(13) (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
Daniel 12:3
And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever.
DLG note...
In the Bible, the wise are the righteous. Wisdom is related to righteousness rather than philosophical comprehension and academic attainment.
The wise shall shine as the starry sky at night. God wants all of His children to shine with His glory, His brightness. We are luminaries in a dark universe. We are guiding lights to those lost on life's seas. The world can set their course by the lives of the righteous.
1 Peter 1:15
(15) But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
1 John 4:17
(17) Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
DLG notes...
Those believers who turn non believers to righteousness will be as the stars forever.
Matthew 5:16
(16) Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Proverbs 11:30
(30) The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that wins souls is wise.
Each With His Own Glory (brightness).
1 Corinthians 15:41:42
(41) There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differs from another star in glory.
(42) So also is the resurrection of the dead...
DLG notes...
God gives us our station, ministry, gifts in life, according to His choosing.
Romans 12:3
(3) For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
As believers we should live up to our calling without being jealous, envious or contemptuous of other Christians. As we walk in the light of Christ, we will shine more and more.
Proverbs 4:18-19
(18) But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shines more and more unto the perfect day.
(19) The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.
Pastors
Revelation 1:16
(16) And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword and his countenance was as the sun shines in his strength.
Revelation 1:20
(20) The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.
Ungodly Men
Jude 1:13
(13) Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.
DLG notes...
Though there is debate as to what a “wandering star” is, we can safely say that it is a star (celestial body) that is no longer in a right relationship with the universe. It is a celestial entity that is a hypocrite (consider the context).
Do not lose your relationship with God or you will lose your place in God's redemptive plan.
Continue to follow Christ, the Sun of Righteousness.
Continue to show forth His light.
Continue follow His course and be an example for others to follow your course.
